Erick Dampier and Tony Parker
So I read recently on Espn.com that Erick Dampier, center for the Dallas Mavericks, stated “Every time he [Tony Parker, San Antonio Spurs guard] drives the lane, we have to put him on his back. The first foul has to tell him he’s in for a long night. My first foul Thursday night is going to put him on his back. I guarantee it.” Now this kind of talk is frowned upon by the NBA, and Dampier avoided getting fined for simply making the statement, but it is yet to be determined if Dampier does end up “putting Parker on his back,” even cleanly, if he will be fined for that as it may be seen as following through on a threat.
I like the intensity that is brewing here, and as long as the foul is not flagrant, I don’t see any reason that Dampier should be fined. If you read the quote, Dampier doesn’t sound like he is talking about hurting or committing unnecessary fouls against Parker, it sounded to me like he is just simply letting it be known he is not going to sit around and watch while Parker torches the Mavs for another 38 points. Granted Dampier will be under more scrutiny by the NBA and its officials tonight than he normally would, but I believe that Dampier should not try to avoid fouling Parker, and risk whatever fine he may receive. Backing down will make him look soft.
