Hope you had a relaxing weekend.
There was tons of news over the past few days, both sports related and non-sports related.
Lets get into it.
Ovechkin vs. Sid The Kid
I didn’t know that hockey players had personalities. I thought there were simply robots under those helmets. Yesterday, the two biggest young names in the NHL went head to head when the Penguins visited the Capitals.
The game had everything the casual hockey fan could ask for. Ovechkin scored the first goal and soon after started to get into it with Crosby. When asked about Ovechkin’s showmanship, Crosby said “I don’t like it personally, but that’s him. And like it or lump it, that’s what he does. Some people like it, some people don’t. Personally, I don’t like it, but you know what, he’s a good player.”
Like it or lump it? Must be a Canadian thing.
The 81st Academy Awards
Last night was the Oscar Award ceremony. I watched a bit and came to a realization. I did not see any of the best picture nominees this year. Not a single one.
UFC 95
Moving backwards into Saturday; UFC 95 aired free on SPIKE. No big-time draw on this card but an up and down solid one.
On the preliminary card, my boy, Junior dos Santos TKO’d the 6’11 Stefan Struve to earn a second impressive win in the octagon.
Josh Koscheck was stunned by Paulo Thiago near the end of the first round when Thiago connected with a combination that included a devastating uppercut. To that point in the fight Koscheck was systematically taking Thiago apart with his stand up. It was a perfect example of the old saying about giving your opponent a “puncher’s chance”.
Demian Maia showed why he is one of the best bjj guys in the world when he defeated Chael Sonnen via submission. Maia transitioned beautifully to catch Chael in a triangle.
In a fight I was looking forward to Nate Marquardt defeated Wilson Gouveia near the end of round 3 via TKO. It was an impressive finish to the fight and just what Nate the Great needed to earn a title shot at 185 pounds down the road. The finish was started by a nice flying knee and ended with a three hit combo that included a spinning back fist that actually connected.
College Bball over the weekend
The Duke-Wake game was a good one as was the ‘Nova-‘Cuse game and the Arizona-ASU game to name a few.
The biggest thing from these games that I noticed was the transgression made by the ASU students. They stormed the court.
The Sun Devils are the 12/14 ranked team in the country while the Wildcats are unranked. I understand the rivalry aspect here but still. No need to rush the court after this win. Although the sign pictured above might make up for it.
