So I was driving to work this morning, yes I work on Saturdays and it sucks, listening to ESPN Radio and Eric Kassilius. He reported a story that is very different.
The NBA has thoughts of a new playoff format that would be the first of its kind. As of now it is a bracket style playoff with the 1 seed vs 8seed, 2 seed vs 7 seed, 3 seed vs 6 seed, 4 seed vs 5 seed and continuing on. Now the new thoughts are wild. Under the new format the number 1 seed would play a team of their choosing in the first round, then the 7 seed would choose from who is left and on down until the 4 seed plays whoever is left. So why would a 1 seed not want to play an 8 seed?
I went through and thought that when Dallas was the 1 seed, they would not have picked Golden State. The Warriors were on fire at that point and were coached by former Mavericks coach, Don Nelson. Maybe this year someone would not want to play the Bobcats because they are on a little bit of a roll (probably not). On the flip side, the year that the Wizards lost Caron Butler and Gilbert Arenas right before the playoffs, they would have been a team for a 1 seed to choose, even though they were a 5 or 6 seed.
This is going to experimented in NBDL this year and will be evaluated for the near future, this is pretty crazy if they decide to do this. I would love to hear some reaction to this.
That’s really interesting. It’ll make that underdog that gets picked play with such a chip on their shoulder.
