calhoun_rideThe story goes that Calhoun fell with about 16 miles to go in a 50 mile charity bike race. In the fall Calhoun suffered 5 broken ribs. After falling, Calhoun got back on his back and finished the race.

That’s bad ass. Forget Billy Donovan swimming with the sharks in South Africa, this is the ultimate bad ass college basketball coaching display. Not only did he finish the race but after the fact he had to be forced to seek treatment by friends. The broken ribs where not discovered until he was admitted to the hospital.

Louisville has played Connecticut twice this year. Once during the regular season to a 93-65 loss and once in the Big East Tourney to a 75-36 loss.

Still the Cardinals are faking confidence going into tonight’s championship match-up. The players were asked about being such underdogs during their media obligations, “That’s OK,” Louisville senior Angel McCoughtry said. “That’s how we win. So I hope they all wish Connecticut wins [tonight]. That’s what we’ve been thriving on, so we don’t want [the negativism] to change. . . . We just want people to keep scratchdoubting us.”

They have lost by a combined 67 points this year but you must realize that the first meeting was in Storrs and the second was in Hartford. Yeah, I’m still not buying it Louisville.

I’m thinking that unless they dress Terrance Williams up like the kid in Ladybugs, they have no shot.

aleqm5gx3yebin2ln27m4oywzn1xb0tkyqUp until last night there had only been two 6 OT games in the history of D1 collegiate basketball–both games were played in the 1950’s. There has been only one game that went longer than this. This was a 7 OT game in 1981. No Big East game had ever gone more than 3 OT’s, including their 1981 championship thriller at the Carrier Dome.

Just some of the history leading into last nights epic game. (more…)

big-east-bracketThe field is set and the bracket is out. You know it’s a hell of a tournament when Connecticut is a 3 seed! That’s right Uconn ends the season 15-3 in conference play and is thus tied with Pitt. Pitt dominated Uconn, beating them twice, and is thus granted the tiebreaker which gives them the 2 seed.

Wait, those are the two best teams in the conference. Aren’t they? Who is the 1 seed? Maybe the most overlooked and underrated team in the country are Rick Pitino’s Louisville Cardinals. They are your Big East regular season champs.689-e18d9f86d5164341bcaf7dc5350089d3standaloneprod_affiliate79_medium

After early season, non-conference, stumbles against Western Kentucky, @Minnestoa as well as UNLV; Pitino has his kids playing well at the right time.

Their next game will be Thursday at Noon against either Providence, Cincinnati or DePaul.

Wait, DePaul? The team that is at the very bottom of the Big East? 0-16 DePaul? (more…)

cal-40-year-old-virginIt seems like some guys just can’t stay out of the news. This weekend was no exception for the media darlings that are Terrell Owens and Alex Rodriguez.

On the opposite side of the spectrum; the smaller conferences had a chance to shine as teams tried to punch their ticket to the dance.

How do you neutralize a 7’3” shot blocking machine?

DeJuan Blair figured out that it would be very difficult for Hasheem to block shots at his normal pace if he was on the court (literally) early in Monday’s game in Hartford. That in mind, Blair played physical with Thabeet early and often. (more…)

Last night was a fun display of college basketball. Rivalry Week is a great attraction for the fan of the sport and last night was no exception.

duncanThe games last night were capped off with the biggest rivalry in all of college athletics; Duke-UNC basketball. The UNC seniors, Hansborough and Green, joined Tim Duncan and Rusty LaRue to become the only players to ever win all four of their games at Cameron Indoor during their careers.

Overall, UNC looked impressive especially in the second half. They are a team that still look like they have all the tools to go deep in the tourney, unlike the Notre Dame’s and Gonzaga’s of the world that have shown weakness. (more…)
