sean-avery-ruleIf you aren’t a big hockey fan (not that I am) you might not be aware that a guy by the name of Sean Avery is one of the most hated players in the league. Also, as you can see above, he is known for creating the ‘Sean Avery Rule’ which was a new take on goalie obstruction/interference. He is a pest in front of the net and thus players do not take so kindly to him.

Yesterday Avery had something off the topic of hockey that he wanted to get off his chest.

“I’m really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. I just wanted to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s about. But, enjoy the game tonight.”

It’s hilarious that the New York Times, USA Today and LA Times refuse to use the words ‘sloppy seconds’ in their reporting.

From the USA TODAY:

The Stars were playing the Flames Tuesday night and Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf is dating Elisha Cuthbert, one of Avery’s ex-girlfriends, according to the Dallas Morning News. Avery, on camera, used a crass term, apparently in reference to Phaneuf’s relationship with the actress, who has appeared on the Fox show 24.

In the video, Avery actually calls the camera’s over to him and goes out of his way to call out Phaneuf. Also in the video you will notice that even his teammates refuse to come to his aide. Not even the owner has a problem with the indefinite suspension of the player he is paying $15.5 million over 4 years:

“I completely support the league’s decision to suspend Sean Avery,” Stars owner Tom Hicks said in a statement. “Had the league not have suspended him, the Dallas Stars would have. This organization will not tolerate such behavior, especially from a member of our hockey team. We hold our team to a higher standard and will continue to do so.”

I do not know a whole lot about Avery beyond this but I think this situation is hilarious. I cannot believe the reaction from the league. An indefinite suspension seems very harsh. Ridiculously harsh.
