homer isotopesI was listening to the radio just the other day and heard a caller quote Homer Simpson before making a point. The radio host remarked something to the affect of, “Why is it that Homer Simpson seems to make perfect sense while others do not.”

I think I have found another case of this starring us right in the face. (more…)

bud-seligSammy Sosa did steroids in 2003. Big surprise. The guy who corked his bat the very same year. What a shocker. What should be more surprising is the say Commissioner Bud Selig is reacting to this information becoming public.

Selig is apparently furious that the names on this list are slowly being leaked. I guess I would be pissed to if under my watch the game that was so affectionately called America’s pastime was sullied. Well, I guess it was way more than sullied. The innocence of the game was straight-up destroyed. For that reason Bud just wants to forget about the whole era and would like nothing more than for us to do the same.

A decade ago Selig was yucking-it-up while McGuire and Sosa were launching an inhuman number of long bombs. That short ten years later, Selig can not be looked at as an enabler for those who ruined the game of baseball.

marty cordovaIf you needed any more proof about steroids in baseball during the 90’s… here is a picture of Marty Cordova, American League Rookie of the Year in 1995.

For those who aren’t up on their latest Marty Cordova factoids; Cordova is now working for the UFC. He is a frequent guest on Dana White’s video blogs.

The picture seems to be from a number of years ago when, clearly, Marty was on ‘roids in shape and playing in the Majors.

We can add this to the steroid manifesto…

brady anderson steroids1I was 10  years old watching Brady Anderson crank home runs at an unreal pace back in 1996. I thought, ‘man, this guy is having awesome season.’

I just thought the Orioles had put together quite the team; Chris Hoiles, Roberto Alomar, BJ Surhoff, Bobby Bonilla and company sure hit a lot of dingers.

Oh to be young and naive.

I bet this whole team was juicy. Yes, including Cal Ripken, Jr. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least–But that would be another topic for another post. Who else was on that Orioles team, hmmm. None other than Raefy Palmerio.

While Randy Johnson just hit 300 wins and presumably cleanly, it just made me think about all of the other great statistics that are now meaningless to me.

david ortiz slump

Just when you thought David Ortiz was at an all-time low, the salsa might have hit the fan yesterday in Los Angeles Anaheim.

It is well publicized that Ortiz is yet to hit a dinger this season. PTI had a toss-up this week; which number will be bigger Zach Greinke’s win total or David Ortiz’s home run total?

Thinking about it that means will Ortiz hit at least in the range of 20-22–no pitchers get more wins than that anymore. Both Wilbon and Kornheiser said yes that Ortiz would break the 20, or so, home run mark.

I don’t think they have seen enough of Ortiz’s at bats to make this call. I am hear to say that I am not sure David will make it to double digits this year.

Yesterday he was giving 12 innings and a total of 7 at bats to make something happen. No, he did not hit a home run–he ended up going 0 for 7. That is not even the worst part. He left 11 men on base! Just another sad development as the steroid era comes to an end.

lou merloni

Lou Merloni dropped a bomb on Saturday during a Comcast Sports Net show cleverly entitled The Baseball Show:

“I’m in Spring Training, and I got an 8:30-9:00 meeting in the morning. I walk into that office, and this happened while I was with the Boston Red Sox before this last regime, I’m sitting in the meeting. There’s a doctor up there and he’s talking about steroids, and everyone was like, ‘Here we go, we’re going to sit here and get the whole thing — they’re bad for you.’

“No. He spins it and says, ‘You know what? If you take steroids and sit on the couch all winter long, you can actually get stronger than someone who works out clean. If you’re going to take steroids, one cycle won’t hurt you; abusing steroids it will.’

“He sat there for one hour and told us how to properly use steroids while I’m with the Boston Red Sox, sitting there with the rest of the organization, and after this I said, ‘What the heck was that?’ And everybody on the team was like, ‘What was that?’ And the response we got was, ‘Well, we know guys are taking it, so we want to make sure they’re taking it the right way.’ … Where did that come from? That didn’t come from the Players Association.”

Merloni clarifed his statements a bit for the Boston Globe:

“It was like teaching your teenage daughter about sex education,” Merloni told the newspaper. “The organization acknowledged that there were likely players using steroids, and basically, ‘If you’re going to use them, this is how you use them so you don’t abuse them.'”

Merloni was in the Red Sox’s Minor League system in 1996 and1997 and played for the big league team from 1998-2002.  And, yes. Yes that is Lou’s wife pictured above. (more…)

Nationals Dodgers Baseball

This piece of crap by T.J. Simers is asinine. He has penned many columns that have had people wondering why he is employed by the LA Times. This one, however, might take the cake.

Now I have no idea whether it was HGH, HCG, ABC or whatever letters of the alphabet Ramirez put into his body. I don’t care, although the mention of a female fertility drug does leave the door open for a punch line or two when he returns.

Remember this was posted today not yesterday. We do know what it was that caused the positive test and it was a female fertility drug called hCG.

Mike Fish over at ESPN.com, has a real piece of journalism: (more…)
