brandon_jennings_young_moneyBrandon Jennings starred at Dominguez High School in Compton, CA. as well as Oak Hill in Virginia. But everyone remembers Brandon Jennings as the high school basketball star who passed up a chance to play at Arizona (as well as other prominent So Cal schools) to get paid to play in Europe.

Jennings stock has gone up and down over the past year. Jennings may have inked a cool million dollar deal with Under Armour but his numbers were less than amazing overseas.

In the Italian League Jennings averaged, 5.5 points, 1.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 17 minutes per game. In the Euroleague Jennings averaged 7.6 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 20 minutes per game. In the Euroleague he shot 38.7 percent from the floor. (more…)

floyd mayoThis whole college coaching thing is sketchy business. That is especially true at the large division 1 basketball and football programs. It would seem that everyone bends rules and it simply becomes a matter of what you can get away with.

The latest story is the resignation of USC head man Tim Floyd. Floyd had been the center of some controversy much of the 3 years he spent in LA. In just his second season, he landed prized recruit OJ Mayo and put USC basketball back on the map. At what cost? (more…)

When I first heard the report of the Broncos interest in USC quarterback Mark Sanchez I was tickled. I guess I was wondering what exactly McDaniel’s plan is. I would go as far to speculate whether McDaniel’s even knows what his own plan is. Then I think about it rationally and assume that this report must be false.

My last thought was that maybe this is a test for new starting QB Kyle Orton. Well lets see how he did…

Orton was on the Dan Patrick Show this morning. He was asked about the Sanchez to Denver rumors:

“That’s what I hear. This is the NFL and you’re always going to have competition, especially at this position. Whoever it is, we’re going to have three quarterbacks in here and whoever it is my mindset won’t change. I play this game to compete. I love the competition of it. You have to be self motivated and like I said it doesn’t matter who’s in here. I want to prepare as hard as I can and play the best football that I can”

Some one is getting a gold star under “Correct things to say” on the Josh McDaniel’s big board!

Much more importantly the girl with Sanchez at the Laker’s game… she is Jennifer Mueller. Jennifer was a freshman this past year at USC. She is from the great state of Jersey and runs track. She also seems to have a love for partying.

The University of Southern California… what a life…

I can hear it now, “Hello ladies. Yeah, I sure am the starting USC quarterback.” I wonder what the hot tub girls will look like that this cat funnels with.

sports-stocks1arrow-down1Frank McCourt and the Dodger’s: offer deal to Manny
McCourt and the Dodgers made an offer to free-agent Manny Ramirez on Wednesday. The offer is a similar two year deal worth $45 million but this offer gives Manny the option to become a free agent after the first season. This is a big time soft move by McCourt. Not only that but it doesn’t even make sense. Manny doesn’t want the option to go somewhere else, he could give a crap where he plays or seemingly even if he plays at all. He just wants a long term deal with guaranteed money.

arrow-down1Vick: Coming home in May
Thursday the Associated Press reported that Michael Vick will be allowed to serve the last two months of his sentence under home confinement. The reason? Because there is no room at a halfway house for him. Vick will still be on electronic monitoring and can only be allowed to leave home when approved by his probation officer. He wil be eligible for release in July.
arrow-down1Trend: High School ball stars ‘spending a year abroad’
Early this week Renardo Sidney, the 6-foot-9 senior from Fairfax, CA committed to USC. This comes after his first choice UCLA couldn’t decide if they could indeed take Sidney. According to Jeff Goodman, there’s a good chance that he’ll end up overseas, following Brandon Jennings’ brilliant path to the NBA. We will see how it works out for Jennings. If he is an NBA success story the game of college basketball will suffer a great loss of star power.
arrow-down1The Giants: short change Lincecum
It could be the best bang for the buck for any pitcher. No for any MLB player. No for any player in all of North American sports. Yesterday, the Giants agreed with right-hander Tim Lincecum on a one-year, $650,000 contract. If Lincecum becomes eligible for salary arbitration after this season, he will be all but guaranteed a ten-fold raise. Have fun while it lasts San Fran, the rental is up come September.

Including my must bet against me college football pick.

ACC vs Big East
UNC has beat up on their Big East opponents this season. On September 11th they went into Rutgers and beat them up 44-12. Just last Saturday the beat up on the visiting Uconn Huskies 38-12. They have a potentially big game this week when Notre Dame come into Chapel Hill.

With Skinner behind center this Wake team is dangerous. They proved it again with a hard fought victory last night over Clemson. Wake could go undefeated the rest of the season, culminating in a showdown November 29th when Vanderbilt comes to town.

Arizona State vs South California?

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)—Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson said quarterback Rudy Carpenter, hobbled by a left ankle injury, “is very doubtful” for the Sun Devils’ game at No. 8 South California on Saturday.

That is from Yahoo! via the AP. Is South California an acceptable name for USC – the University of SOUTHERN California?

At this point, trying to find a picture of Cassel in USC gear is harder than finding a picture of Vince Young smiling... seriously, try it...

In the year 1999, the last time Matt Cassel started at QB:

  • January 31st – The Broncos beat the Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII
  • February 2 – Hugo Chávez becomes President of Venezuela.
  • March 29 – For the first time, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closes above the 10,000 mark, at 10,006.78.
  • April 20 – Columbine High School massacre
  • May 5 – Microsoft releases Windows 98 (Second Edition)
  • June 1 – Napster debuts.
  • July 18 – David Cone pitches a perfect game, the 16th in history.
  • August 31 – Apple Computer releases the Power Macintosh G4.
  • September 7 – Viacom-CBS merger
  • October 12 – World population reached 6 billion people
  • November 24 – Matt Cassel starts in a Los Angeles City Invitational playoff game. Cassel went 3/11 for 46 yards.
  • December 31 – Boris Yeltsin resigns as President of Russia, leaving Prime Minister Vladimir Putin as the acting President.

Those are some of the biggest news stories, month by month, in 1999. I’m sure many people remember where they were when they heard some of these stories. This means you can comprehend just how long ago it really was.

I mean, Napster! Napster! Those were the days. Stealing was so much easier and less frowned upon. You know what we were running Napster on, Windows 98! Cassel must have been able to get any Eminem song so easily on that USC network.
