NCAA Final Four Michigan St N Carolina BasketballNCAA Final Four Michigan St N Carolina Basketball

I thought Michigan State was going beat a #1 or a third consecutive game. The economy was going to rally. Ford, GM and Chrysler were going to prosper. At least that’s what the tele told me…

I have been prospering in other ways this March and April as I have had a good tourney as far as picking games goes. I have about a dozen wins to only one loss in my actual bets. For the bracket I filled out I have also been successful. I am in first place in each of my three pools. The problem is I had Louisville winning it all so for a full 2 weeks I’ve known that my chances of winning were slim or none in each of these pools.

bracket

I liken this to a head-to-head fantasy league where you are the best team all year and then the week the playoffs hit you run into a jugernaut, last playoff seed team, that can’t be stopped. Clearly this has happened to me. Once again that’s how I feel today. I had three of the final four teams but not the one that matter–the one I picked to win.

In the end the best team in the country won the tourney. And, well, I suppose the best bracket won my pools. I guess.

cutler-jerseyIt finally happened. After weeks of drama Cutler is out of Denver. The Cutler Bet goes to the underdog. I won! Cutler is now a Bear. McDaniels might have let go the “franchise QB” but he didn’t exactly get the shaft in return. The Broncos received Kyle Orton and three picks — including the 18th overall pick this year and a No. 1 next year.

It makes sense; two No. 1 picks for a guy who has never lost in the playoffs. Oh… he was never won a game yet either… But he has been impressive in his two full years as a starter… try under .500 with a 17-20 record.

It seems more and more like McDaniels made out like a bandit in this one. The only problem is you still don’t have a QB Josh!

More on the weekend… (more…)

bracketThe person who is winning your bracket pool at this moment is likely the one with the best insight into the Tourney. I’m not bias at all–but as you might have guessed, I am that guy.

Going into yesterday, and coming out of yesterday, I have a a first place bracket in all three of the pools I am in.

I have three of the four final four teams correct including ‘Nova. The only problem; I had Louisville winning it all. Looking back that was probably a bad pick. The odds of them making it to the Final Weekend AND winning it all… probably pretty slim.

So it took until the final weekend but my bracket busted out yesterday afternoon as the Spartans dismantled, my pick to win it all, the Cardinals.

Back from Vegas and still feeling the effects, we made it through another week.

I like to think that it takes quite a bit to make me tired but a late night fantasy baseball draft, intramural basketball game and East Regional showdown preceded by a trip to Vegas will do it.

las-vegas-airport-luxorThe Vegas trip was amazing. If you haven’t been go. If you have been go back. And if you have been multiple times, go during March Madness. It is incredible for a sports fan.

On the way there I saw the Head Coach of the MIT basketball team in the airport with there star player who is likely going to play overseas next year. It took me a few but yes I actually recognized a division III basketball coach… weird.

I went 4/4 with my tourney game betting:

Maryland over Cal
Purdue over Washington
USC over BC
MSU over USC

Having that income was key.

morrisonOn Friday night we were in a private room at LAX. I met a girl from Gonzaga who said she dated Adam Morrison. That’s always a good sign when the girl you are talking to is attracted to a guy as fugly as this –>

So you’re saying there’s a chance?

The Garden was bumpin’ last night with some of the best teams in the country in town for the weekend.

#1 Pitt vs. #4 Xavier
My friend and I decided to place a wager on the game to make things more interesting. We wanted to take Xavier +7 but when we contacted the bookie he said he had the line at +6.

It was like the scene in Casino when Pesci and De Niro are talking to a gambler who asks what the line is on a certain game. De Niro responds with a number .5 below the line the man received from his bookie. The man then asks aloud, “Why am I l85329035TL039_Pittsburgh_Paaying 7 then”? Which Pesci responds with, “Because your a f-cking jackoff. That’s why.”

That’s how I felt as Pitt stormed back, like a f-ing jackoff. We knew it was a busted spread but wanted the action anyways.

Karma reared it BEAUTIFUL face in the final seconds. Xavier inexplicably fouled with two seconds left (Two seconds!) sending Pitt to the line with a change to move their lead from 4 to 6.

So to make the moment even more intense, Wanamaker makes the first free throw effortlessly. Forget ‘nothing but net’, I don’t think this shot even hit the net. It was perfect. If he makes his second free throw we push and all is lost.

Remember, at this point, Pitt has sealed the deal. We are sitting near Xavier fans who are dead silent as there team has let the game slip away in the second half. Wanamaker readies himself and shots. HE BRICKS IT COMPLETELY! We stand up and shout in excitement among the Xavier fans we have been cheering with all game.
